As you think about your future, you may have already decided to pursue your success through education. Your interest in pursuing FAScholars scholarships would lead me to make this assumption.

Without question, nothing is more important to your future success than a good education. I remember when I attended four night classes a week to earn my Masters Degree and when I drove many miles every week to pursue my doctorate, I often wondered, “Why am I doing this when my job doesn’t require an advanced degree?” My Mother always replied, “An education is something no one can take from you, and you never know what the future holds.” Looking back, I realize she was right. If I had not pursued these degrees, I would not have been qualified for the faculty and administrative leadership positions I later obtained, and my professional success would have been limited.

About the Author

Dr. Lana Carnes, Professor Emeritus and former Department Chair of Management, Marketing, and International Business at Eastern Kentucky University, earned her Ed.D. in Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation with concentrations in Higher Education Administration and Organizational Communication from the University of Kentucky.  Dr. Carnes served as Department Chair for ten years, and her career at Eastern Kentucky University spanned 32 years.  Before joining the faculty in the College of Business and Technology, Dr. Carnes was Associate Director of Eastern Kentucky University Development for 12 years, where she was responsible for major campaigns including the renovation of the John Crabbe library.  Prior to beginning her career at EKU, Dr. Carnes worked for nine years in the industry as an inventory control and account specialist.

Dr. Carnes is a well-published researcher with numerous articles published in leading journals in her field.  Her research interests include business and intercultural business communication, the role of critical thinking in strategic communication, assessment in education, collaboration between institutional units, and research applied to teaching and classroom effectiveness. As part of her professional development, Dr. Carnes has traveled to all 50 United States and 65 countries.  She has made international presentations in Austria, China, Iceland, Mexico, Poland, and United Arab Emirates.
